Cangshan Mountain in Dali City, southwest China's Yunnan Province is the highest summit of the southern Yunling Mountains. Starting from halfway up at about 3,500 meters, vast stretches of Delavay's firs stand proudly on the precipices. This is the southernmost fir species in China. The species was once found around the world some 60 million years ago, but began to retreat to colder climates at higher latitudes about 12,000 years ago.
