United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy to Sudan Ramtane Lamamra on Sunday expressed optimism about the possibility of achieving peace and stability and ending the conflict in Sudan.

Lamamra made the remarks while meeting with Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council and general commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), in Port Sudan, the sovereign council said in a statement.

Lamamra said that he held consultations during his visit to Sudan with a number of officials and representatives of civil society, vowing to work with all parties to crystallize the UN's positive role.

"These meetings have greatly contributed to acquainting me with the realities of Sudan and the official Sudanese point of view toward some initiatives aiming to achieve a peaceful solution and launching a peace process that allows the Sudanese people to restore decent life under an independent sovereign state," he noted.

Al-Burhan briefed the UN envoy on the efforts to seek a peaceful solution, stressing the Sudan government's commitment to democratic transformation and a transitional period that ends with general elections.

Sudan has been witnessing deadly clashes between the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 15, 2023.

More than 7.3 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan since the conflict broke out, and more than 12,000 people have been killed in the fighting, according to the latest update by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
