The population of the endangered Ningqiang pony breed has reached 206 after six foals were born earlier this month, according to a breeding center in central China's Shannxi Province.
This miniature horse typically stands between 90 and 106 centimeters. They were used as pack horses and worked in the fields. Due to technological advancements and changes in transportation, the use of the horse continued to decline, as did its population. To boost its population and preserve the breed, the local government has established breeding centers and scientific research organizations since 1990.
