China has retained its position as the world's top manufacturing hub for 14 consecutive years, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said on Friday.
The country's large manufacturing enterprises, defined as those with an annual main business turnover of at least 20 million yuan ($2.8 million), saw their combined value-added output increasing 5 percent year on year in 2023, said Xin Guobin, the vice minister of MIIT, at a media conference.
The total value-added industrial output went up 4.6 percent year on year in 2023, up one percentage point from 2022 data, Xin said.
"We have focused on strengthening advantageous industries and the driving role of the 'three new' products (new energy vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and photovoltaic products)," said Xin.
The vice minister said that in 2023, the annual revenue of the country's telecommunications business increased by 6.2 percent, and the software industry increased both in volume and efficiency.
He also noted that the internet industry in China has steadily recovered, with network infrastructure continuing to consolidate, service capabilities upgrading, and the total scale of computing power becoming second in the world.
In 2024, the internal and external environment for China's industrial economy will still be challenging and complex, but the long-term trend of the country's industrial economy will not change, thanks to its complete industrial system, huge market size and mature information infrastructure, said Xin.
