Sudan suspends membership in East African bloc

Sudan's Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday the country has frozen its membership in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an East African bloc.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council and head of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), informed the president of the current session of the IGAD of Sudan's decision to freeze its membership in the bloc, the ministry said in a statement.

Last week, Sudan voiced its objection to the IGAD summit, scheduled for January 18 in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, to discuss the situation in Sudan, noting what is happening in Sudan is an internal affair.

Khartoum had said it was freezing its relations with IGAD after it had invited paramilitary chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to the gathering. The Dagalo-led Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group has been engaged in confrontation with the SAF in an ongoing civil conflict.

According to the ministry's statement on Saturday, Sudan's move came as a result of "the IGAD's disregard of Sudan's decision, which was officially conveyed to it, to freeze dealing with the bloc on any issues related to Sudan, which did not happen at the IGAD's extraordinary summit held in Uganda on Thursday."
