Zheng Qinwen gained the upper hand against Wang Yafan 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (10/8) in an all-Chinese round of 32 match at the Australian Open on Saturday, setting up her next match with France's Oceane Dodin who downed fellow Frenchwoman Clara Burel 6-2, 6-4.

Zheng, 21, bested her own record at the Australian Open entering the fourth round, while Wang also topped her own Grand Slam record having reached the third round in Melbourne. Zheng had previously reached the U.S. Open quarterfinal last year, when she fell short against Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus who is the defending champion of the opening Grand Slam of the year.

Zheng, ranked 15th in the world, and Wang, ranked 94th, had only met once before, in 2018, when Wang took the victory in two straight sets.

On Saturday, Zheng established an early lead of 4-0 in the opening set, and made sure she maintained the edge despite Wang winning four games. Wang broke first in the following set, dominating the match with power serves and reduced her deficit when she broke again in the eighth game.

Wang showed great resilience when Zheng was serving in the 10th game of the deciding set and leading 5-4, and forced the match into tiebreak which went to Zheng on her second match point, as the match lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes on the center court, Rod Laver Arena.

Nicknamed "Queen Wen," Zheng won her first WTA title at Palermo in October 2023, and later added another in China's Zhengzhou. She also won her first Asiad gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
