Manchester United have hired Omar Berrada, former chief football operations of Manchester City, as the new CEO for the "Red Devils," the club announced on Saturday.

"Manchester United is pleased to announce the appointment of Omar Berrada as its new CEO," United said in a statement. "The Club is determined to put football and performance on the pitch back at the heart of everything we do. Omar's appointment represents the first step on this journey."

City confirmed Berrada's departure as well on the same day. "Manchester City Football Club can confirm that Omar Berrada has resigned from his role as chief football operations officer at City Football Group," the club said in a statement. "The club understands his decision to look for a new challenge and he leaves with our thanks and best wishes."

Having been working for City in different roles including group commercial director, director of partnership sales and then chief football operations officer since September 2020, Berrada was there witnessing and contributing to building the most successful part of the club's development.

ESPN revealed that Jim Ratcliffe, who bought 25 percent of United's shares, led the act of hiring Berrada and it was agreed by the Glazers, the majority owner of the club. The Red Devils have been running without a CEO since Richard Arnold stepped down in November 2023. General counsel Patrick Stewart has been playing the role on interim basis.

The arrival of Berrada not only became the first major appointment by Ratcliffe, but also the first chief executive hired externally. Those who worked in the position before him, Martin Edwards, Peter Kenyon, David Gill, Ed Woodward, Arnold and Patrick Stewart, were all internally promoted.

"It is our stated ambition to re-establish Manchester United as a title-winning club. We are pleased that Omar will be joining us to help achieve that goal, so that, once again, United fans can see, in the words of Sir Matt Busby, the red flag flying high at the summit of English, European and world football," United said in the statement.
