Eight people were confirmed dead and dozens are still missing after a landslide buried their houses in a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Monday morning, local authorities said.
The landslide hit Liangshui village in Zhenxiong County at around 6 a.m. on Monday, burying 18 houses and trapping 47 people.
Rescuers are combing through the debris to search for the missing people amid freezing temperatures on Monday night. The snowfall also complicated the rescue efforts.
Over 200 firefighters in neighboring Guizhou Province will join the rescue efforts, along with 41 fire trucks and six rescue dogs.
More than 500 residents have been urgently evacuated and relocated. The provincial health department has sent working teams to treat the wounded.
China's Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched a working team to help with rescue efforts amid a level-II emergency response. The Ministry of Natural Resources also activated a level-II emergency response.
The Red Cross Society of China has allocated 1,000 sets of disaster relief materials to Zhenxiong County. More than 100 tents, 400 quilts, 200 cotton coats and 14 sets of emergency lighting equipment have also been provided to the disaster-hit village.
China' Ministry of Emergency Management and the Ministry of Finance have allocated disaster relief funds totaling 50 million yuan (about $7 million) to help with search and rescue efforts, relocation, resettlement secondary disaster detection, and repairs of damaged buildings.
