When traveling down the Red River in Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Autonomous County, southwest China's Yunnan Province, you will be surprised to find Royle's spurge thriving on the cliffs of the river valley. This member of the spurge family, commonly seen on the African savanna, has also settled in Yunnan's dry-hot valleys.
The plant has long and slender stems in multiple sections, which radiate from the main trunk, resembling the horse-whip wielded by the ancient Hegemon-King. Hence it gets the Chinese name "Hegemon-King's whip."
