Rescue efforts have wrapped up after a building fire which killed 39 people and injured nine others in east China's Jiangxi Province on Wednesday afternoon, said local authorities.  

The fire took place at approximately 3:30 p.m. in a street shop in the city of Xinyu, said the local fire response emergency headquarters.

Those injured have been sent to the hospital for treatment.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
