Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday ordered curbing the repeated occurrence of safety accidents and ensuring the safety of people's lives and property, as well as social stability.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, gave the instruction in response to a deadly building fire in east China's Jiangxi Province.
The fire took place at approximately 3:30 p.m. in a street shop in the city of Xinyu. As of now, 39 people have been killed, nine injured, and the rescue efforts have wrapped up.
Xi demanded to identify the cause as soon as possible and take stern actions against those responsible in accordance with the law.
He urged all-out efforts to rescue the injured and appropriate measures to console the families of the victims.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang also gave an instruction, requiring the rescue of the trapped people to be completed promptly with a minimum amount of casualties.
Li asked relevant parties to strengthen the investigation of safety risks.
Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has gone to Jiangxi to guide the rescue work.
