Incumbent Tuvaluan Prime Minister Kausea Natano lost his parliamentary seat in the general election held in the Pacific island nation on Friday, according to media reports.
Natano reportedly failed to secure one of two seats in the Funafuti constituency.
The newly elected parliament will choose the country's new prime minister from its 16 lawmakers. With Natano's defeat, the main rivals for the post are Finance Minister Seve Paeniu, who ran the election unopposed, and former Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga.
Climate change was a major topic in the election. Tuvalu, which comprises nine islands, is facing pressing challenges as its low-lying atolls routinely flood.
The Pacific island of some 11,200 people has repeatedly appealed to the international community to take greater action to help Pacific island nations address climate change.
