South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region welcomed its first offshore wind farm on Sunday, which, when fully built, will supply electricity to five million local families.

Engineers connected the wind farm to the power grid of Fangchenggang City, a port city that borders Vietnam.

A wind farm is made of turbines that can convert the power of wind to electricity. It is considered one of the main sources of green energy.

The Fangchenggang wind farm is China's first affordable offshore wind power project with zero subsidies from the government, according to a report by the China Media Group.

The project began in March 2023, and is China's largest wind farm under construction.

What's more, a supply chain worth 20 billion yuan ($2.82 billion) will be established in order to build and maintain the wind farm, boosting the local wind power industry, CMG reported.
