China's gift to the world: The perfect cup of tea

China was the first country in the world to cultivate tea and remains the largest producer of the Camellia sinensis shrub, from which most varieties of tea are made. Tea has never been grown in large quantities in Europe due to the unsuitable growing conditions, but the Azores have a unique microclimate that is ideal for tea production. On the north side of the island of Sao Miguel is Europe's oldest tea plantation and factory, where both green and black tea have been grown since 1883.
