U.S. says strikes on Iran-linked targets in Iraq and Syria 'successful'

02:04

U.S. strikes against Iran-linked targets in Iraq and Syria on Friday took place over 30 minutes and appear to have been successful, the White House has said.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told journalists that aircraft, including B-1 bombers launched from the United States, took part, carrying more than 125 precision-guided munitions. Earlier on Friday, the White House said that U.S. military forces struck targets at facilities in Iraq and Syria in retaliation for a deadly attack on a U.S. military base in Jordan on Sunday that killed three U.S. soldiers. The facilities that were targeted were being used by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and militias allegedly affiliated with it, the White House claimed. The U.S. has blamed Iran for the attack on its base in Jordan, but Tehran has denied involvement and vowed to respond to any threat from the U.S.
