The death toll from forest fires in the Valparaiso region in central Chile has risen to 56, the local government confirmed Sunday, making this the deadliest fire in recent decades in the South American nation.

President Gabriel Boric declared on Friday night a state of emergency in the region, deploying the military and providing resources for those in need.
