Ever since tanghulu went viral on the internet, this traditional Chinese street snack has been recreated in many different ways, using different fruits and flavors in different countries and regions. With its bittersweet taste, traditional Chinese tanghulu, made from pieces of Chinese hawthorn fruit coated in rock sugar on a bamboo stick, has been popular since the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). Nowadays, street vendors also use cherry tomatoes, mandarin oranges, strawberries and grapes to make this classic snack.
