Seven fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were killed and 18 others wounded in an attack on an American base in eastern Syria overnight, war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday.

The U.S.-backed force, who put the toll at six, said on Monday the attack hit a training ground at al-Omar base in Syria's Deir el-Zour province and accused "Syrian regime-backed mercenaries" of carrying out the attack.

No casualties were reported among U.S. troops, the SDF added.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a Iran-backed Iraq-based militia, has claimed responsibility for the attack, releasing a video that showed them launching a drone from an unspecified location.

It marked the first significant attack in Syria or Iraq since the U.S. launched retaliatory strikes over the weekend against Iran-backed militias that have been targeting its forces in the region.

On January 28, a drone slammed into a base in Jordan, killing three U.S. soldiers and wounding more than 40, an attack Washington blamed on Iran-backed forces.

The U.S. responded Friday with a series of unilateral strikes on Iran-linked targets in Syria and Iraq, and has said it would press on with its retaliation.
