Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government, according to a statement released on the government's website on Monday.

First deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar will serve as the interim prime minister, the press service of Tokayev said in the statement.

"In accordance with Article 70 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, I decide: to accept the resignation of the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and to temporarily assign the duties of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Roman Vasilyevich Sklyar," said Tokayev's decree.

"Members of the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan will continue to fulfill their duties until the approval of the new composition of the government," said the decree.

Tokayev's office did not say why the cabinet had resigned.

Before the decree was published, the government of Kazakhstan was headed by Alikhan Smailov, who was appointed prime minister in January 2022 and reappointed in March 2023.
