At least 123 people have died from the forest fires, which are raging in central Chile for the third consecutive day. Black smoke is billowing into the sky over many parts of the Valparaiso region, home to nearly one million in central Chile. Firefighters are using helicopters and trucks, but struggling to quell the flames.

Areas around the coastal tourist city of Viña del Mar are some of the hardest hit and rescue teams are struggling to reach all the affected areas. 300,000 people live there and at least 1,600 have been left without homes. Several neighborhoods on the eastern edge of Viña del Mar were devoured by flames and smoke, preventing residents from escaping. Officials said 200 people have been reported missing in the city and its surrounding areas.
