Hundreds of Yingge dance performers took to the streets of Shantou City, Guangdong Province as a part of the city’s ongoing Spring Festival celebrations. As an intangible cultural heritage, the Yingge dance is also known as the “Dance of the Heroes.” This traditional folk dance from southeast China is based on the story of the heroes of Liangshan who attacked the Daming Mansion during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The exaggerated makeup and brightly colored costumes transformed the performers into the swaggering ancient heroes.
