The Brooklyn Nets have fired their head coach Jacque Vaughn, the team announced on Monday.

"This was an incredibly difficult decision, but one we feel is in the best interest of the team going forward," the Nets’ general manager Sean Marks said in a statement. "Jacque has represented this organization with exemplary character and class for the past eight years. The consistent positivity and passion he poured into our team daily will remain with the players and staff he interacted with throughout his tenure. We thank Jacque for all he has done for the Nets and the borough of Brooklyn, and wish him, Laura and their family nothing but the best in the future."

Assistant Kevin Ollie will be promoted to interim coach, according to ESPN.

"To Joe Tsai, Clara Wu-Tsai, Ollie Weisberg, Sam Zussman, Sean Marks and front office, Nets coaches, staff, players, BSE family and the entire Brooklyn borough: It was a pleasure being your Head Coach," Vaughn said in statement issued to ESPN. "I hope each individual I interacted with felt respected and valued. Just know I gave you everything I had every single day. Onto the next chapter. Amor Fati."

Vaughn had been working with the Nets since 2016, first as the top assistant coach under Kenny Atkinson, then as the interim coach after Atkinson was fired. After Steve Nash took over the Nets in September 2020, Vaughn became his assistant head coach. Nash was fired in November 2022 before Vaughn was named the interim coach again. Then the team made his position permanent.

The Nets won 43 of their 75 games under Vaughn during the 2022-23 season, finished in the sixth place in the Eastern Conference, advanced to the playoffs, but were swept by the Philadelphia 76ers 4-0 in the first round.

The team were 21-33 this season before Vaughn's dismal and lost to the Boston Celtics 136-86 in their final game prior to the All-Star break. They are currently 11th in the East, 2.5 games behind the Atlanta Hawks in 10th and the play-in tournament zone.
