China will continue to take necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies if the U.S. imposes sanctions on Chinese firms over cooperation with Russia, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Tuesday.
The remark came after media reports said that the U.S. is considering slapping sanctions on Chinese companies it believes are helping Russia fuel the conflict in Ukraine.
China has always upheld an objective and fair position to promote peace talks on the Ukraine crisis, Mao told reporters at a daily briefing, saying China neither stood idle nor took advantage of it.
China has the right to conduct normal cooperation with other countries and opposes unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction that have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the UN Security Council, Mao added.
