This field observation started on February 17 and will last a week. The survey team plans to carry out a field observation every month starting in 2024 and adopt a method of multi-vessel surveying at the same time to further clarify the distribution characteristics of the freshwater porpoise.

"With multiple vessels operating at the same time and in different locations, the observed information about the finless porpoise can be more accurate. Its population can be further clarified. Its distribution range and communication between packs can be understood," said Wang Zhengfei, the leader of the Yangtze finless porpoises survey team.
Yangtze finless porpoises are a critically endangered freshwater species endemic to China. A scientific investigation conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in 2022 showed that the number of the species has reached over 1,200.
