EU ambassadors on Wednesday agreed in principle on a 13th package of sanctions in the framework of Russia's action against Ukraine, said the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU 2024 on social media.

The package is one of the broadest approved by the EU, the statement read, adding that it will undergo a written procedure and be formally approved on February 24.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the agreement by the EU's 27 countries and said it would further cut "Russia's access to drones," AFP reports.

As part of the new package, diplomats said the EU also imposed an asset freeze and visa ban on North Korea's defense minister, Kang Sun Nam, for the supply of ballistic missiles to Moscow, the report added.

The EU has imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia in the two years of its war and has so far put some 2,000 officials and entities on its blacklist.
