Improper operation of the ship lead to the collision between a vessel and a bridge which killed five people on Thursday morning in south China's Guangzhou City, said local authorities at a news briefing on Thursday afternoon.

The victims include a bus driver, a motorbike rider and three people who were in vehicles that fell into the river under the bridge.

The accident happened at around 5:30 a.m. when a container ship hit the pier of the Lixinsha Bridge in Nansha District. Five vehicles were involved in the incident. Two of which plunged into the river while the others fell onto the vessel, a preliminary investigation has found.

Three other people suffered injuries and were sent to the hospital for treatment. Two of them fell from the bridge and sustained bone fractures and soft tissue contusions, and are in stable condition, according to the First Affiliated Hospital at Sun Yat-sen University.

Lixinsha Bridge is the main transportation route and also the main water supply line for residents of Sanmin Island, the home of approximately 8,000 residents. As the crash damaged the main water pipe, the local government has established a temporary supply line to provide residents with fresh water, and a redirected transport route to Nansha District has been established. However, everything else is functioning as standard: the island has a reliable power supply and communication is working properly.
