Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu called on the Group of Twenty (G20) to put development issues high on the agenda as he attended the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ma said that the G20 should stay true to its original mission of promoting international economic cooperation, improve the macroeconomic policy cooperation mechanism, and cooperate to push forward the reform of global economic governance.

To address global challenges, the G20 should adhere to genuine multilateralism and support the United Nations and its Security Council in playing a key role, he added.

Ma pointed out the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security is a fundamental guideline for China in dealing with international hotspot issues.

Noting the current situation in Gaza is extremely grave, and regional peace and stability have suffered a serious impact, the Chinese diplomat said the UNSC must fulfill its responsibilities under the UN Charter and take action as soon as possible to promote a ceasefire and end the fighting, and to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.

China calls for the convening of a larger, more authoritative and more effective international peace conference to make efforts to realize long-term peace and stability in the Middle East, Ma stressed.

During the meeting, Ma also elaborated China's position on the situation in the Red Sea and the crisis in Ukraine.
