The U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant on Thursday about Israel's operations against Hamas in Khan Younis and efforts to secure the release of hostages, according to a statement.

They also discussed the need for more aid to reach Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the need for a plan to ensure the safety of and support for those sheltering in Rafah before any military operations proceed there, the statement added.
