Water supply throughout an island connected to a fractured bridge was restored no more than two days after a vessel collided with the bridge in Guangzhou city, south China. Due to misoperation by the crew, a container ship's hull first hit pier No. 18 of the Lixinsha Bridge in Nansha District. Consequently, the ship's bow hit pier No. 19, resulting in a crack in a part of the bridge.
The Lixinsha Bridge is the main transportation route and water supply line for residents living on Sanmin Island. Shortly after the accident, the local government established a 3-kilometer emergency supply line to provide residents with fresh water.
