Real Madrid are planning to lure another star away from Bayern Munich as the La Liga giants reached a verbal agreement with Alphonso Davies, The Athletic reported on Monday.

Davies, 23, has a contract that will expire in 2025 with Bayern. Real's chief scout Juni Calafat and director general Jose Angel Sanchez have asked him not to sign extension with the Bundesliga powerhouse so the Canadian star can join them either for free in 2025 or on a relatively low price in 2024.

Real signed players from Bayern before in both ways. In 2014, Toni Kroos arrived at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu after Real paid 25 million euros (about $27.1 million) for his transfer when he was valued at 42 million euros (about $45.6 million) by Transfermarkt.com. Alaba left Bayern for Real as a free agent in 2021 and saved the club about 55 million euros (about $59.7 million).

There are multiple clubs, including Real's long-time rivals in La Liga, Barcelona, interested in acquiring Davies, who, however, prefers to join Real, according to The Athletic. He and the club met in person in mid-February and that meeting helped him make the decision.

Real will reportedly sign Kylian Mbappe this summer. If they can add Davies and his sharp penetration to their wing, their offense will be even more unstoppable especially in transition. Real are currently leading La Liga with 65 points, six above Girona and eight over Barcelona after 26 games. They also beat RB Leipzig 1-0 on the road in the first-leg game of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on February 13.

As for Bayern, they have every reason to retain Davies with a long, new contract. The club struggled in all competitions this season. They are eight points behind Leverkusen after 23 games; they lost to Lazio 1-0 in the first-leg game of the Champions League on February 14; they were knocked out from the DFB-Pokal by Preussen Muenster from the German third division; their manager Thomas Tuchel will step down after the 2023-24 campaign.

The chance of Bayern beginning a rebuild after this season is not zero. Therefore, keeping a "young veteran" like Davies who has played nearly four years for the club will mean a lot for the reigning Bundesliga champions.
