The Foshan Ancestral Temple, with its array of ceramic figurines on the ridges of its roof, is a famous Taoist temple in Foshan, south China's Guangdong Province. The centuries-old Taoist sanctuary is considered a treasure trove of the extraordinary artistry of Shiwan ceramics, a traditional folk pottery technique that has been practiced in Foshan for centuries.
The pottery figurines embody various motifs and themes from Taoist mythology and Chinese folklore.
These ceramic roof ridges not only add aesthetic beauty to the temple but also hold great cultural and historical value, representing a typical form of traditional Han architectural decoration in the Lingnan region.
Covering an area of 3,500 square meters, the architectural complex of the Foshan Ancestral Temple is arranged along the north-south central axis. It is a masterpiece of the worship of the God of the North, which was built by people who migrated from central China to the Lingnan region in south China's Guangdong.
