China's permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, Chen Xu, called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip at the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on February 29.

Noting that Gaza has sunk into an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, Chen said an immediate ceasefire is the overwhelming call of the international community and the most basic requirement for the restoration of peace. China urges Israel to provide the necessary conditions for humanitarian agencies to carry out their aid work in Gaza and effectively implement the ruling issued by the International Court of Justice, he said.
