Fruitful outcomes were adopted at the closing plenary of the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday.
The UNEA-6 concluded with 15 resolutions adopted, two decisions and a Ministerial Declaration aimed at halting the progression of the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste, according to the official website of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
President of UNEA-6 and Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of Morocco, Leila Benali (2nd-R) and Executive Director of the UN Environment Program Inger Andersen (L) react during the closing session of the 6th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) at the United Nations (UN) offices in Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya, March 1, 2024. /CFP
"The negotiations were not always easy. Member states did not always agree," said Inger Andersen, the executive director of the UNEP, at the closing plenary.
"Even in disagreement, we search for commonality. UNEA-6 has opened important conversations, not all of which have landed, but that I am sure that they will continue in the spirit of finding solutions that work for people and planet," she said.
China's participation
Huang Runqiu, president of the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) and Minister of Ecology and Environment of China, participated in a series of events with delegates, promoting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) and global biodiversity conservation.
A three-day program of Multilateral Environmental Agreement (MEA) side events was held from February 28 to March 1. MEAs are international agreements that are intended to promote international cooperation to address global environmental challenges.
MEAs play an important role in facilitating the parties to jointly formulate and implement environmental protection policies and effectively strengthen biodiversity protection, said Huang at a side event.
It is necessary to strengthen the coordination among MEAs, carry out more practical cooperation through mechanisms such as the KM-GBF initiative, and build a community of life for man and nature, he said.
