Blizzard slams California's Sierra Nevada, shutting down roads

00:59

A powerful blizzard howled in the Sierra Nevada, bringing heavy rain and snow. One meteorologist said it was "as bad as it gets" as a power blackout gripped tens of thousands of homes. Snowfall was expected to exceed 3 meters at higher elevations, creating safety concerns for residents. There was also concern that snow would block travel along the key freeway. Meteorologists predicted between 0.9 to 1.8 meters in communities.
