The National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, and its Standing Committee will provide legal safeguards for sound economic development, focusing on deepening reform, realizing opening up and high-quality development and improving livelihood, said Lou Qinjian, spokesperson for the second session of the 14th NPC, on Monday.

Lou made the remarks during a press briefing on the session scheduled from March 5 to 11.

The country will deepen the financial institutional reform and promote the development of private enterprises to secure the reform achievements through legislation and bolster the internal driving force of the economy, said Lou.

It will also formulate tariff laws, revise frontier health and quarantine laws, and improve the foreign-related clauses in existing laws to continuously foster a better business environment.

China highlights high-quality development, said Lou, adding that the country will organize the compilation of ecological and environmental codes to further advance ecological conservation and green and low-carbon development.

To ensure and improve people's livelihood, the country will formulate laws on academic degrees and preschool education and revise the laws on preventing and treating infectious diseases.

"Overall, China has more favorable conditions than challenges in its economic development," said Lou, adding that the underlying trend of a rebound in the economy and long-term growth remains unchanged.
