China urges the U.S. to stop making irresponsible comments and honor its commitments with concrete actions, a Chinese spokesperson said on Monday.

Lou Qinjian, spokesperson for the second session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's national legislature, made the remarks as he briefed the press a day ahead of the opening of the NPC's annual session.

On the development of China-U.S. ties, Lou stressed that China's attitude is consistent. China follows the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, and pushed for steady, sound and sustainable growth of bilateral relations, he said.

Noting China honors its commitments, the spokesperson voiced the hope that the U.S. side will also honor its commitments, work with China to build together the five pillars for China-U.S. relations, and implement the important consensus reached at the San Francisco meeting between the two heads of state.

Lou also made it clear that the U.S. presidential election is the domestic affair of the U.S., on which China takes no position.

"No matter who is elected as U.S. President, we hope the U.S. will work with us in the same direction and advance the steady, sound and sustainable growth of bilateral relations," said Lou.

"Frankly speaking, ordinary Chinese people often see members of U.S. congress put out bills to counter China, target Chinese institutions, companies and nationals or even make provocative visits to China's Taiwan region," said the spokesperson.

These acts have grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, undermined China's legitimate rights and interests, and disturbed the normal exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, he added.

In response, the NPC has made clear China's firm opposition through statement and other means, according to Lou.

Lou also said over the past years, despite multiple difficulties, the legislatures of China and the U.S. have maintained contacts through various means.

Noting this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the spokesperson believed that the legislatures of the two sides should still have more contacts, dialogues and exchanges to enhance mutual understanding and play a constructive role in the smooth development of China-U.S. relations.
