A symposium on the protection and inheritance of cultural heritage in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region was held in Lhasa on March 4, where it was announced that the total number of immovable cultural relics found in the entire Xizang region had risen to 5,587.
A survey of institutions in Xizang's seven prefecture-level cities and 74 counties revealed that 1,310 new immovable cultural relics had been discovered by the end of February, bringing the total number of immovable cultural relics in the region to 5,587.
The scope of the survey includes immovable cultural relics on the ground, underground and underwater within the Xizang region. It encompasses ancient cultural sites, tombs, buildings, grotto temples, stone inscriptions, important historical sites, and representative modern and contemporary structures, among others. In total, there are six categories and 63 subcategories in the survey.

The main content of the survey includes the name of the surveyed objects, spatial location, protection level, category of cultural relic, age, ownership, usage, preservation condition, and other information. It also covers the conservation status and causes of damage to the cultural relics themselves, as well as information and data on the natural and cultural environment surrounding the relics, and the protection status of lower-level cultural relics.
The scope of the survey includes maps and photographs of the cultural relics, and the simultaneous collection of specimens and other relevant materials for registration.
The survey began in November 2023 and will end in June 2026.
