Action crime film "The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon," a dark horse in the cinematic offerings after the Spring Festival holiday, has notched up a relatively high score of 8.2 on Douban, one of China's major movie rating platforms. Since its release on March 1, the film has grossed a total of 193 million yuan (26.8 million U.S. dollars) on the Chinese mainland as of 3 p.m. (Beijing time) on March 6, according to box-office tracking site Maoyan.
The film draws inspiration from "Zhou Chu's Biography" in the "Book of Jin," an official Chinese historical text covering the history of the Jin Dynasty (265-420), and the "New Account of the Tales of the World." The former work tells the story of a young man named Zhou Chu, who turns his back on his wayward ways, kills tigers and eliminates dragons, and reforms himself.
The movie of the same name in Chinese interprets this old classic tale into a modern context. Starring Chen Guilin, the film portrays a wanted criminal who believes his days are numbered and decides to eliminate the other two top criminals on the wanted list to establish his reputation.
It's worth mentioning that the film is based on an actual case, where the characters of Chen Guilin and one of the criminals on the wanted list are centered around real criminals. Alongside elements of gangster revenge and crime action, the director skillfully depicts Chen's struggle to escape his fate, integrating criticisms of society and observations on human nature. As a crime movie, it features exciting action scenes that provide viewers with a visually stimulating and powerful experience.
