Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region invests in water resources management, meeting drinking water demand, said Mei Yu, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Mei, who is also the director of the Water Resources Bureau of Xinjiang, made the remarks at the Members' Corridor on the sidelines of the Two Sessions in Beijing on Thursday. The Members' Corridor is a flexible press conference normally held at a hallway in the Great Hall of the People where the political adivsors get a close contact with the media.

A total of 19.5 billion yuan ($2.7 billion) has been invested in the region, and 1,428 safe drinking water improvement projects have been implemented since the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), according to Mei.

The increase in grain sown area and total output in the region ranked first in the country in 2023, he added.
