Development and security should both be emphasized in the global governance of artificial intelligence (AI), said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the second session of the 14th National People's Congress in Beijing on Thursday.

"New things and new opportunities should be embraced. At the same time, brakes should be checked before setting off," said Wang.

Wang said China's main focus is to ensure three principles: AI remains a force for good, AI's safety and AI's fairness.

He warned that the attempts to create "small yard, high fence" in AI development would result in mistakes of historic consequences. "Such attempts cannot block other countries' technological development, and only fragment international industrial and supply chains and undercut humanity's ability to tackle risks and challenges."

Wang stressed the significance of the cooperation between major countries as well as the capacity-building for the developing countries in the field of AI. He said China will submit a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly to promote technology sharing among parties, bridging the AI divide and leaving no one behind.
