Electric vehicles (EVs) will be able to run over 1,000 kilometers on a single charge in one to two years, said Chen Jun, a deputy to China's 14th National People's Congress (NPC) and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, at the Deputies' Corridor in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday.

Chen, also the vice president of Nankai University, shared with the press that his team has developed solid-state batteries with an energy density of about 400 watt-hours per kilogram, 30 percent higher than the currently most advanced 300 watt-hours per kilogram lithium-ion batteries on the market.

The deputy said his team is aiming to break through the research and development (R&D) of solid-state batteries with an energy density of 600 watt-hours per kilogram in the next one to two years, which will allow EVs to run for more than 1,000 kilometers on one charge.

The team has also developed a flame retardant electrolyte that can work around the clock with a wide temperature range, including at minus 70 degrees Celsius, said Chen.

Many countries around the world are focusing on the development of solid-state batteries. Once industrialized, they could change the current EV industry, and open up emerging markets such as electric aviation.

The deputy added that safe, high-performance batteries are vital to both the EV and energy storage industries.
