In 2018, Lai's dedication resonated with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit. His appreciation for the traditional cloth shoes and his purchase of a pair not only symbolized support for artisans, but also brought national recognition to Tangchang cloth shoes.
This recognition, coupled with Lai's efforts to adapt and sell her shoes online, has seen a resurgence in interest in this age-old footwear. It also earned Tangchang cloth shoes a place on China's national intangible cultural heritage list in 2021.
