Washington urged to stop harassing Chinese students studying in U.S.

Beijing urged Washington to stop harassing Chinese students studying in the country under the pretext of national security, vowing to take measures to safeguard legitimate and lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks on Friday in response to reports that a Chinese student was recently once again interrogated when entering the United States at the San Francisco International Airport.

For some time now, the U.S. has frequently harassed, interrogated and deported Chinese students arriving in the U.S. out of political purposes, Mao pointed out.

The action by the U.S. side, driven by strong ideological bias, is far beyond the scope of normal law enforcement, Mao noted, adding such moves seriously violate the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of the students concerned, disrupt China-U.S. cultural exchanges and cross-border travel, and go against the common understandings reached by the two presidents on enhancing and facilitating cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

China has lodged serious representations to the U.S., she added.

The spokesperson also said the U.S. side claims to support people-to-people exchanges between the two countries and welcome Chinese students, but in fact overstretches the concept of national security and conducts selective, discriminatory and politically motivated law enforcement against Chinese students.

In essence, it is because some in the U.S. still cling to a Cold War mentality, Mao noted.
