Editor's Note: CGTN invites media outlets in provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across China to share their distinctive reports on regional economic development on the CGTN website, offering global readers a comprehensive economic landscape of the world's second-largest economy.

Developing and expanding new productive forces is the key to leveraging the natural environment in south China's Hainan Province, as well as its green and low-carbon advantages.

In recent years, Hainan has actively promoted the construction of a green modern industrial system, supported the high-quality development of the Hainan Free Trade Port and seized the opportunities contained in new fields and new tracks.

These opportunities will paint a new picture of green, low-carbon and high-quality development.

According to data from the news briefing of Hainan on air pollution prevention and treatment, in 2023, Hainan's air quality was further improved, with the proportion of excellent days reaching the highest level in history, exceeding 80 percent for eight consecutive years.

The PM2.5 concentration in four cities and counties, namely Sansha, Wuzhishan, Lingshui and Qiongzhong, has reached 10 micrograms per cubic meter or less.

The Boao Forum for Asia News Center has realized zero power consumption, and the project has undergone comprehensive renovation and upgrading in enclosure structure, equipment and facilities, intelligent devices and renewable energy.

After renovation, the annual power consumption of the building can be reduced by more than 130,000 kilowatt-hours, and the annual power generation can reach 550,000 kilowatt-hours, making the building realize "zero energy consumption."

Hainan has been leveraging its great ecological advantages to drive economic development in recent years. In 2022, a zero-carbon demonstration zone was set upon Dongyu Island in Boao.

This initiative guarantees zero-carbon operations through 18 projects, including landscaping, green building and eco-friendly transportation, by maximizing the utilization of local wind, light and heat resources.

In 2021, the clean energy shore power of Yangpu International Container Terminal was put into operation. Calculations based on consumption last year show that the utilization of pure shore power can save nearly 8,000 tonnes of fuel, reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 25,800 tonnes.

In 2022, the terminal was already using new energy pure electric tractors, realizing full coverage of clean energy.

In May 2023, the Yangpu International Container Terminal was officially rated as the first "four-star" green port in the Hainan Free Trade Port, successfully taking a crucial step towards becoming a "zero carbon" green port and a model for the green and low-carbon development of Hainan ports.

Situated at the convergence of China's new western land-sea corridor and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, Yangpu Port has consistently attracted diverse shipping components and invested considerable efforts in establishing itself as a "green and low-carbon" international shipping hub.

In doing so, it is becoming a new gateway for high-level opening up to the world.
