PLA resolutely safeguards national sovereignty, territorial integrity: spokesperson

Opposing "Taiwan independence" and promoting reunification, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) resolutely safeguards national sovereignty and territorial integrity, a Chinese spokesperson said on Saturday.

Wu Qian, a spokesperson for the delegation of the PLA and the People's Armed Police Force at the second session of the 14th National People's Congress, made the remarks during a press briefing in response to recent reports that the U.S. government again approved arms sales to China's Taiwan region.

Noting that the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair, which brooks no external interference, Wu said any connivance and support for "Taiwan independence" separatist forces will undermine peace across the Taiwan Straits.

He urged the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, stop official contact with the region in any form, and stop sending wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities refuse to acknowledge the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, and intensify provocation by colluding with external forces to seek "Taiwan independence," which is the root cause for the continued tensions across the Taiwan Straits, he said, urging the DPP authorities to bear all consequences.
