Artificial general intelligence (AGI), which has triggered widespread international interest in the past year, has become a typical representative of new quality productive forces, said Zhu Songchun, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), on Sunday.

Zhu, also director of the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI), made the remarks at the third "Members' Corridor" on the sidelines of the Two Sessions.

Taking the world's first AGI "child" developed by BIGAI as an example, Zhu said such AI entities will be able to provide services in every aspect of human life in the future, such as elderly care, housework and companionship.

AGI has become the "commanding heights" in global scientific and technological competition, said Zhu, highlighting talent as the key to victory.

He said China has been pouring efforts into building a strategic force in the field. Two of China's top universities – Tsinghua University and Peking University – have set up experimental classes on AGI. Last year, another eight Chinese universities, together with BIGAI, joined a collaborative talent training program, aiming to cultivate top talents in the field to meet the country's demands.

Human society is stepping into the era of intelligence, said Zhu.

"I believe that with our joint efforts, we will be able to find a technological path that is in line with China's national conditions so that AGI can be developed safely and benefit mankind."
