It has been 13 years since the catastrophic 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake hit the Fukushima Prefecture. Although much time has passed, the memory of the Fukushima nuclear disaster still haunts the local community.
In January 2024, CGTN spent two weeks exploring the region and taking photos of Iitate village in central Fukushima – one of the areas worst affected by the disaster. The once-green fields now lie barren, and the deserted schools tell a sordid tale. Radiation levels in the area remain high, reminding us of the danger that persists.
However, despite these challenges, the villagers remain resilient and are working hard to rebuild their homes and lives. Witnessing their unwavering determination and the gradual return to normalcy is truly inspiring.
