The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reached a three-year, $100 million contract extension with their quarterback (QB) Baker Mayfield, ESPN reported on Sunday.

The deal includes $50 million of guaranteed money: $30 million in the first year and $20 million in the second, according to ESPN. There are also $5 million per year of incentives.

"I wanted a chance to come back," Mayfield said in a statement. "I love coach [Todd] Bowles and the staff. I'm happy to be here and I want to win more in the postseason."

Having been drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the first-overall pick in 2018, Mayfield had a quite rough career with the Browns, the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Rams, where he left with a 31-38 record and made the playoffs only once.

That's why when he joined the Buccaneers in March 2023, he signed a small, one-year contract of only $4 million. However, that became the turning point of his career. Mayfield started all 17 games for the team last season and completed 364 of his 566 passes for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns, both career highs, with 10 interceptions.

The Buccaneers finished the regular season with a 9-8 record and reached the playoffs. They beat the Super Bowl LVII runner-up, the Philadelphia Eagles, in the National Football Conference (NFC) Wild Card Game, but lost to the Detroit Lions in the NFC Divisional Round.

The Buccaneers have never missed the playoffs since QB Tom Brady joined them in 2020, including winning Super Bowl LV in February 2021. The team retained their No. 1 wide receiver Mike Evans with a two-year, $52 million deal that included $11 million in incentives during this offseason.
