China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is set to pass a national security bill that outlines new offenses, including treason, secession, sedition, subversion against the Central People's Government and theft of state secrets. The bill also includes tougher penalties, such as life sentences, for some offenses. On March 8, the HKSAR submitted the bill to the Legislative Council and is fast-tracking the process to pass it.
Nick Chan Hiu-Fung, a lawyer and a deputy to China's 14th National People's Congress from the HKSAR, sat down with CGTN's Li Jingjing on the sidelines of the Two Sessions in Beijing and explained why it is essential to have this law.
