A deputy to the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, shared his experiences of contacting people in need to help improve social governance during a corridor interview ahead of the closing meeting of the second session of the 14th NPC National Committee in Beijing on Monday.

Qian Haijun, who is also a manager of State Grid Zhejiang Cixi City Power Supply Company, told reporters that he has been working in the electricity industry for 33 years. He said during over three decades of experience he had noticed security risks in the electrical circuits of the families of the disabled and the elderly, so he distributed over 500 business cards to those in need and set up a volunteer center to provide them with help.

After spotting a lack of electrical technicians in China's remote areas, together with colleagues he initiated a training plan to support electrical technicians in rural areas such as the Xizang Autonomous Region and Sichuan Province and contribute to China's rural revitalization.

He added that State Grid Zhejiang Cixi City Power Supply Company has worked with local courts, civil affairs bureaus, education bureaus, communities and industrial parks to promote social governance, focusing on the needs of the people.

There are nearly 3,000 deputies to the 14th NPC, and the total number of deputies of people's congresses at all levels is over 2.5 million, according to official data. As deputies, they have a responsibility to contact the people, solve grassroots problems and conduct research, as well as make and submit proposals to the NPC so that the people's voices can be better heard.
